Liposuction is a procedure to, in essence, remove fat pockets in areas where there is a significant amount of fat. The surgery is the easy part; the recovery is challenging, and you need to follow certain instructions. When liposuction is performed, you will have a lot of swelling, bruising, and inflammation secondary to the suction of fat and injury to the soft tissue, which is what the liposuction cannula is doing. One way to help with the swelling, inflammation, lumpiness, and bumpiness is to wear a girdle.
So, why it is important to use a girdle? Girdles are essential to decrease inflammation and avoid postoperative liposuction deformities. If the body is not compressed evenly, your results are not going to be as good. There are different types of girdles for different areas of the body. If you have liposuction of the abdomen, a corset or a girdle is necessary to get the shape that you desire. The girdle needs to be tight. It helps the body reabsorb the fluid faster by preventing fluid collection and swelling in the areas where liposuction is performed. The swelling occurs because during the procedure, a lot of local hormones and chemicals are released, which makes the vessels leak fluid as well as inflammatory cells to combat the inflammation. The girdle will increase the pressure around the vessels and shift the fluid from the surrounding tissue into the vessels, essentially helping the lymphatic system expedite the resolution of the symptoms. Wearing a girdle is an essential part of any cosmetic surgery where liposuction is performed. If you do not use a girdle after surgery, your recovery will take much longer, and your results probably will not be as good.

As the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure last year, liposuction is now a household word. However, only a few are aware that you can actually utilize the fat removed from liposuction to further enhance your physical appearance. Through fat transfer, it is now possible to transplant the harvested fat from liposuction to areas in the body that that look arguably better with added volume such as the face, breasts, hand, and buttocks.
The Rising Popularity of the Brazilian Butt Lift
Although buttock augmentation via fat transfer, popularly known as the Brazilian butt lift, did not make it into the Top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures in 2013, it is worth noting that it enjoyed a whopping 58 percent increase in the number of procedures performed that year in comparison to 2012.
Surprisingly, it’s not just women who are looking into giving their derriere a boost. This New York Times article last year talked about the increasing number of men who decided to do something about their non-existent butt via fat transfer.
Who Can Have the Brazilian Butt Lift
Apart from the desire to enhance the buttocks, anyone who is thinking of having a Brazilian butt lift should have sufficient amounts of fat in other areas of the body such as the abdomen and thighs. In addition, you should be near or within your ideal body weight at the time of the procedure. Finally, it is important to have realistic expectations of the procedure.

In the Houston area, my patients frequently want to reshape or contour the stubborn areas of the inner thighs, outer thighs, and waist. Liposuction is a very good option, if used properly to enhance and balance the waist to hip ratio. The key for successful results is, not only to remove the excessive fat, but to balance your figure based on your overall proportions.
The ratio of an aesthetically beautiful female figure is a waist to hip ratio of about 0.7. In other words, liposuction is, not just the removal of fat from unwanted areas, but also creating the illusion of a more proportionate body. This is very important in gluteal sculpting were aggressive liposuction of the lower back accentuates the take off of the buttock and makes the butt actually appear larger even without fat transfer or gluteal implants. The same concept applies when doing liposuction of the flanks. This will result in an hour-glass appearance and the appearance of larger hips.
In my practice, lots of my patients come for corrective surgery because of an excessive removal of fat, which should not be the goal of any liposuction procedure. Instead, I strongly propose creating harmony based on anatomical and ethnic variations. Removing fat from some areas and enhancing others is the key for a successful liposuction procedure and the creation of natural curves.
In the next blog, I will talk about using the fat transfer collected from liposuction and injecting it in the buttock area to improve its shape and projection.
Fat is removed for a Brazilian butt augmentation with liposuction. There are different liposuction techniques that can be used to harvest the fat including traditional liposuction. In my practice, I use power-assisted liposuction for this procedure. Power-assisted liposuction is similar to traditional liposuction in that it uses a suction cannulla, but the cannula vibrates back and forth allowing the extraction of viable fat. Now, the power of this liposuction cannula needs to be decreased by half because it will damage the fat for subsequent transfer.
In my practice in Houston, I typically wait for about 6 months after a Brazilian Buttlift before revising an area that requires additional contour. Any type of lipo can accomplish this task including laser lipo. Although I am not a big proponent of laser lipo for high volume liposuction, it works well for small areas. I do not recommend using laser lipo as the modality of choice to harvest the fat for transfer for the Brazilian butt lift. In other words, during the first surgery (Brazilian buttlift) it is contraindicated to use laser lipo. Remember: You need the fat alive in order for the results to be long lasting.
In summary, do not do laser lipo or ultrasonic lipo for a Brazilian butt lift procedure. Wait for at least 6 months after the Brazilian buttlift and see how your skin retracts and if there are any areas that will require revisions. If this is the case, any method of lipo will be acceptable.
