Do I need revision surgery after buttock augmentation?

Buttock augmentation surgery is commonly performed in the United States as it is the only method to get bigger and more alluring buttocks with an impressive projection. Unfortunately, when it comes to the size of the buttocks, there is not much the patient can achieve with just exercise and diet, so resorting to plastic surgery is natural when a certain result is expected.

Before preparing to undergo this procedure, patients should be made aware of the risks and potential complications that can be associated with it. In other words, patients should know whether additional procedures are required in time.

When it comes to breast implants, for example, it is a well-known fact that breast implants come with a ten-year warranty. This means that after a period of time, they need to be changed. Revision surgery might also be required if the patient develops a specific complication. But when it comes to butt implants, things are different. Before anything else, patients should know that gluteal implants are different from breast implants in terms of durability. Butt implants are created to last a lifetime, so this means that a revision surgery won’t be needed to remove and replace them. However, there are other cases when revision surgery is needed after the butt augmentation procedure.

Additional interventions after the initial butt augmentation might be required if the patient didn’t achieve the expected result. Unsatisfactory results can be caused by many factors. Among these factors are the lack of skills and experience of the plastic surgeon, lack of proper communication and understanding between the patient and plastic surgeon, the patient’s unrealistic expectations, and the inability of the patient to follow post-operative instructions, among other things. Unsatisfactory results can be of two types: unsatisfactory for the patient but good according to industry standards, and unsatisfactory both for the patient and by industry standards. When the results are not satisfactory according to industry standards, it means that asymmetries are present or there is another cosmetic imperfection not corrected with the procedure.

Revision surgery might be recommended even for patients who had successful procedures but are not happy with the results achieved. In this case, the recommendation is to see another plastic surgeon and get a second opinion. In some cases, the plastic surgeon might recommend revision surgery to achieve the desired results. In other cases, the plastic surgeon will explain to the patient why the results he desires can’t be achieved or shouldn’t be achieved. For example, if the patient wants bigger buttocks but does not have enough tissue to cover the implants, the plastic surgeon will recommend avoiding getting revision surgery to replace the implants with bigger ones.

Revision surgery to replace the implants with smaller ones might also be a good option when the patient has implants that are too big and is confronted with certain complications after the intervention.
