Frequent questions about the butt lift

There are several factors that can lead to the unpleasant, saggy and loose aspect of the buttocks, but generally speaking, significant weight fluctuations and aging are the causes of patients requiring a butt lift surgery.

If the sagginess of the buttocks is severe, there is only a surgical excision that could correct it. This means that the butt lift procedure is the indicated treatment. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people undergo this procedure all over the world and enjoy the benefits of getting rid of buttocks sagginess.

The butt lift procedure can be performed as a stand-alone intervention or in association with other procedures, especially for patients who had bariatric surgery or undergone other weight loss program.

Here are some questions about the butt lift surgery. It is important to find the answers to these questions before scheduling your intervention.

Who should consider undergoing the butt lift surgery?

The butt lift surgery could be a good option for both men and women if they have an excess of saggy skin at the level of the buttocks. As we have already mentioned, most patients who had bariatric surgery or lost a significant amount of weight in any other way are good candidates for the procedure. However, before undergoing the butt lift surgery, make sure that your weight is close to normal and it has been constant for at least six months or more. Your plastic surgeon will advise you not to schedule the intervention before these conditions are met because if weight fluctuations occur after the butt lift, they could alter the aesthetic results achieved.

You should also consider undergoing the butt lift surgery if you feel uncomfortable and lack self-confidence when it comes to the aspect of your buts. If the excess fat and skin at the level of the buttocks are making it difficult for you to function on a day to day basis or you are confronted with mobility issues because of this, you should contact the plastic surgeon as soon as possible for a pre-operative consultation.

To be a good candidate for the intervention of butt lift you should also not smoke for at least three weeks before and after the procedure and have a general good health and emotional condition, as well as realistic expectations from the procedure.

2. How is the butt lift surgery performed?

During the pre-operative consultation and after the medical examination and the discussion about your expectations, the plastic surgeon will determine what the surgical plan that will provide the best results in your case is. If the sagginess is severe and extends to other parts of the body, the surgeon might recommend a lifting of the entire lower part of the body to get rid of the excess tissue. In some cases, the elimination of the excess tissue will result in smaller buttocks. This is the reason why some patients might consider having the butt lift surgery performed at the same time with a butt augmentation with implants.

The butt lift surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. It starts with the plastic surgeon making an incision on the upper part of the thighs, the hips, the inguinal area or the inferior fold of the buttocks. The incisions are used to eliminate the excess skin and fat tissue and to be able to redrape the skin that is left on the buttocks and increase the tension in it. After the excess tissue is eliminated the skin redraped, the incisions are sutured, and the dressings and compression garments are put on the operated area.

Liposuction can be associated with the butt lift surgery too if the patient presents a thick adipose layer at the level of the area to be operated on or the surrounding areas.

3. What to expect in terms of scarring?

After any type of body lift procedure, including the butt lift, the incisions are longer or smaller depending on the amount of tissue that needed to be eliminated. This means that if a significant amount of tissue was eliminated, the scar might be longer. The good news is that when it comes to butt lift, the incisions are easy to hide in the natural folds of the body, either on the upper part or the lower part of the buttocks. If the procedure was performed successfully and the scar healing process went on smoothly, the chances are that the scars will be difficult to notice, even when wearing lingerie or swimsuits.

If liposuction is performed in association with the butt lift, the signs left behind by liposuction will look like small dots once the scars have completely healed and matured.

4. How to prepare for the surgery?

The preparation for the butt lift surgery is important, especially considering the fact that this is a complex procedure. Smoking should be ceased three to six weeks before the procedure is scheduled to facilitate a better and faster recovery. Certain anti-inflammatory medication such as aspirin should be avoided two weeks before the procedure as they can increase the risk of excessive bleeding. The same is valid for naturist supplements and even herbal infusions. Avoid them as their anti-coagulation effects might determine complications during the procedure or after.

Aside from the mental and physical preparation for the procedure, there is also getting ready for the post-operative period. First, you should talk to your friends and family and tell them what is to be expected during the recovery period, so they can make themselves available to help you in case you need it. More than this, ask someone to take you and pick you up from the medical facility where the procedure is performed and also stay with you for the first 48 hours so you won’t be alone.

Make sure to have your home ready for the recovery period, as this is where you will spend most of the two weeks that are recommended to take off from work after the butt lift surgery. Have a balanced diet before the intervention as this will promote fast healing after the procedure.

5. How is the recovery period?

It is normal for patients interested in undergoing this intervention to know what to expect in terms of recovery.

You should know that the discharge from the medical facility where the butt lift is performed will happen within hours after waking up from the effects of the general anesthesia if no complications occur. This means that the patient will go through recovery in the comfort of his own home.

The patient will leave the medical facility with drain tubes inserted close to the surgical area. The drain tubes don’t cause any pain or discomfort, and they help with the elimination of blood and other liquids hence avoiding the formation of seroma and hematoma.

A certain level of pain and discomfort will be present for the first few days after the procedure was performed, but easily alleviated with pain medication. From the second week after the procedure, the pain will subside.

A firm recommendation is to wear the compression garments recommended by the plastic surgeon for as long as he deems it necessary as they help with reducing the post-op swelling and improve the aesthetic results achieved with the procedure.

6. Are the results of the butt lift sustainable?

The results of the butt lift are permanent in the sense that they won’t disappear with time; however, they could be impacted by factors such as weight fluctuations and aging, among others. The general recommendation is to maintain a healthy lifestyle with plenty of physical exercises and a balanced diet to be able to enjoy the results of your procedure for as long as possible.

Like it is the case with any other type of plastic surgery intervention, the results are sustainable as long as the patient is dedicated to maintaining them.

The butt lift intervention is in some cases the only effective solution to get a better looking buttock and to get rid of the unpleasant looking sagginess at the level of the rear end. The procedure is recommended in case of severe sagginess and the presence of an excess fat and skin tissue on the buttocks. The procedure is very different from the Brazilian butt lift, and the surgical plan involves the surgical removal of the excess of tissue.
