How to recover quickly after buttock implants surgery

The buttock implants surgery is a complex and major procedure that should be performed only by a board-certified plastic surgeon in an accredited medical facility. The procedure is associated with certain risks and potential complications, as it is the case of any other surgical procedure.

The recovery period after the buttock implants surgery can be more demanding for the patient considering the fact that the patient is not allowed to sit on the buttocks directly or lay on the back. This means that the patient will need to get comfortable in different positions and this could take a while for him to get used to.

The recovery period after the butt implants surgery is often of no longer than two weeks. However, this depends from patient to patient and also the patient’s ability to follow the post-op instructions plays an important role.

In this article, we will discuss the details of the butt implants surgery and also what the patient can do to recover quickly after the intervention was performed.

Overview of the butt implants surgery

In recent years, the demand to have aesthetically pleasing buttocks has grown massively. The trend is to have big, round and shapelier buttocks, but for many people, this can only be achieved with the help of plastic surgery. The aspect of the buttocks is dependent on many factors, including genetics and the patient’s lifestyle. If the patient had a sedentary lifestyle or because of the genetic inheritance, the buttocks might be small, saggy or with a not very attractive shape. Nowadays plastic surgery offers different treatments that can correct the imperfections that are present at the level of the buttocks. When it comes to small buttocks, there are two procedures that are performed to increase the size of the behind. These procedures are butt implants surgery and fat transfer to the buttocks. Fat transfer to the buttocks can only be performed if the patient has an excess of adipose tissue in one or multiple areas of the body as the plastic surgeon will need to harvest that fat, process it and then reinject it into the buttocks to create a more beautiful shape and increase the size. It is important to know that while the fat transfer to the buttocks is the “natural” method to enhance the buttocks as it only uses the patient’s own fat, the results after the procedure are not comparable with the ones achieved after butt implants surgery.

When butt implants surgery is performed, the plastic surgeon will use silicone implants to add more volume to the butts. These implants come in different shapes and volume, and during the pre-operative consultation, the plastic surgeon will recommend the exact type of implant that will help you achieve the results you desire.

The procedure starts with a general anesthesia. After the patient is asleep, the plastic surgeon will start with the incisions. The incisions are positioned either in the gluteal fold, on the upper part of the body or under the buttocks. Through these incisions, the plastic surgeon will create a pocket in or under the gluteal muscles and in this pocket the implants will be inserted. The length of the incision is dependent on the size of the implant. In other words, the bigger the implant, the larger the incisions. However, the patient doesn’t need to worry about visible scars after the buttocks surgery as the incisions will be placed in areas where they could be easily masked by the skin folds.

To prepare for the butt implants surgery, the plastic surgeon will advise you to avoid smoking for at least three weeks before the procedure is scheduled. The birth control medication should also be paused the month before the procedure. Another important recommendation is not to take anti-inflammatory medication for two weeks before the intervention. Because the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, a fasting period of at least six to eight hours is required before the procedure is performed. Depending from patient to patient and particular characteristics and medical particularities, your plastic surgeon might give you other recommendations or not.

How to recover quickly after the buttock implants surgery

The first and most important thing that you can do after the procedure is performed to ensure a fast recovery is following the plastic surgeon’s indications and contact him immediately if unexpected side effects occur.

A faster recovery is possible if the patient has the appropriate post-op conduct and if potential complications are avoided. This is the role of the pre-operative indications that we mentioned before, to prevent complications that could occur during or after the intervention is performed and help with a faster recovery.

Smoking, for example, could trigger complications such as wound dehiscence, fat tissue necrosis or delayed wound healing. This is why it is important for the patient to stop smoking three weeks before the intervention and remain a non smoker for at least the same period of time after the procedure was performed. Smoking causes a lack of proper oxygenation of the blood, and this causes in return a delay in the healing of the tissues affected by the surgery because they don’t get enough nutrients.

Infection is another complication that should be avoided at all costs to allow the patient to have a quick recovery process. Even before leaving the medical facility where the procedure was performed, the patient will be instructed to pay attention and monitor the surgical area and his condition for signs of infection. In the case of butt implants surgery, the infection that could occur can be either at the deep level of the implant or at the surface of the surgical wound. When deep tissue infection occurs, it often happens because the procedure wasn’t performed in a sterile environment or the plastic surgeon didn’t follow all the safety protocols. The infection of the surgical wound can happen because the patient doesn’t put in the time and effort to keep the area clean and dry at all time. Using products that are meant for fast wound healing like creams and gels can also trigger infections if used before the wounds have closed. Always ask for the plastic surgeon’s recommendations before applying any product on the surgical incision, especially during the first two weeks post-op.

To prevent infection, the plastic surgeon will prescribe antibiotics treatment for five days post-op. To ensure a quick recovery make sure to take the antibiotics as per the doctor’s orders.

To have a quick recovery is important to maintain a good balance in between rest and being active in the first few weeks post-op. Resting in bed non-stop immediately after the procedure was performed is not a good idea. The plastic surgeon will recommend short walks around the house every couple of hours to make sure blood clots are not formed. But a few days after the procedure is performed the pain and discomfort are starting to subside, and the patient might be tempted to get more active and engage in more activities. It is important not to overextend yourself during these two weeks as it can prolong the recovery process and also trigger unnecessary pain. Also, make sure to take your pain medication as prescribed by the plastic surgeon, especially during the first week post-op. Undergoing surgery is a big deal for anyone, both physically and emotionally, so there is no need to put yourself under more stress by not taking the prescribed medication on time.

When it comes to the recovery after the buttock implants surgery, if often takes no longer than two weeks. During this time the patient will need to pay attention to any signs of infection as this complication can cause a delay in the healing process. Usual signs of infection are high fever, redness, and inflammation of the incisions site, pus coming from the incisions.

Avoiding smoking is essential both before and after the procedure is performed if you want a quick recovery. Smoking can cause delayed wound healing or wound dehiscence which could delay the healing process for longer and need additional treatment too.

Following the recommendations of the plastic surgeon to the letter and taking your medication as prescribed by the doctor is important for your recovery. After the intervention is performed, make sure to have plenty of rest to allow your body to recover, but also have short walks around the house every couple of hours to avoid blood clot formation.
