Factors that increase the risk of infection after buttock surgery

Among the most performed plastic surgery procedures on the buttocks are butt implant surgery, Brazilian butt lift, and butt augmentation with fat grafting. All procedures are complex and delicate and need to be performed by an experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon, but the one that entails more potential risks is butt implant surgery.

Butt augmentation with gluteal implants involves the use of silicone prostheses implanted in the buttocks to increase their volume. While the procedure involves certain risks, it is the only procedure that can deliver spectacular results in just one session, especially when it comes to the projection of the buttocks.

The incisions for butt implant surgery are made either under the buttocks or in the intra gluteal fold. Due to the position of the incisions where bacteria can proliferate quickly, there is always a risk of developing an infection. When undergoing the butt implant procedure, patients need to be aware what the factors that increase the risk of infection after surgery are.

– Applying creams or other products on the incisions

All patients want to speed up the recovery process as much as possible; however, each body heals at its own pace, and there is nothing to be done about this. Patients are advised not to apply any products or creams on the incision site. There are many products available nowadays both online and offline that promise miraculous healing. But applying any sort of product not recommended by the plastic surgeon can trigger infection and hence prolong the recovery process.

– Sitting on the buttocks

The recommendation to not sit, lie or sleep on the back side or the buttocks for at least three weeks is often made to help the patient achieve good results after the procedure. Sitting directly on the buttocks shortly after surgery could cause a shifting of the implants and alter the results. However, the pressure that is put on the incisions when the patient sits or lies on the back can also trigger wound opening or the rupture of sutures of the incisions, which is a factor that increases the risk of infection.

– Not keeping the incision site clean and dry

The incision area for butt surgery is very sensitive and prone to bacterial proliferation. This is the reason why it is essential for the patient to keep proper hygiene on the incisions to ensure infections don’t occur. The area should be kept clean and dry at all times, and the patient should change the dressings regularly as per the plastic surgeon’s recommendation. Showering is possible and advised after a butt enhancement procedure; however, avoid baths or sitting for too long in hot water.
