How soon is sitting possible after a buttock augmentation procedure?

How soon is sitting possible after a buttock augmentation procedure?

Introduction

Many patients ask how soon they can sit after the buttock augmentation procedure. Buttock augmentation is an effective plastic surgery procedure that can enhance your backside by either using your body fat or an external device such as an implant. Whether you want to get implants or fat transfer, it is essential to be careful when it comes to sitting after the surgery.

Most plastic surgeons advise patients who undergo buttock augmentation to avoid sitting for at least two weeks after the surgery. It is important to avoid sitting during this period because sitting can apply pressure to the butt, which can damage the fat cells or result in wound dehiscence in the case of butt implant surgery.

When can you sit after buttock augmentation?

If your buttocks are smaller or poorly shaped, you may consider getting buttock augmentation. There are two types of buttock augmentation procedures: implant surgery and fat transfer. Butt implant surgery is recommended for patients who want to get large and sensuous buttocks. On the other hand, fat transfer is best for you if you’re going to get shapelier and mildly projected buttocks.

There is no doubt that bigger and shapelier buttocks look aesthetically welcoming. However, undergoing buttock augmentation is not an easy task. It is, in fact, a major decision you can make. It is essential to keep in mind that after the procedure, the patient has to follow many instructions and be extremely careful. You will have to go through a recovery process that can extend to many weeks. A main portion of the recovery will take place within the first two weeks.

Sitting after buttock implant surgery

Butt implant surgery is highly invasive. It involves incisions on the buttocks and placement of the implants inside the buttocks. On the other hand, fat transfer does not require incisions on the buttocks, but it does involve injecting fragile fat cells removed from other areas of your body into your buttocks. The recovery period is critical in case of both procedures.

One of the primary instructions you must follow after the procedure is about sitting after the surgery. Many patients assume they can sit immediately following the operation, but the reality is otherwise. Sitting after the surgery is not allowed for two weeks. The first two weeks after the procedure are very important. If you get implants, your buttocks will be swollen, bruised, and traumatized. Sitting during the first two weeks can lead to many aesthetic and health complications, such as:

Incision splitting, bleeding, and infection: First off, when you sit during the first two weeks, the strain can cause the incisions to split open. The incisions are fragile and need enough time to heal. Sitting is not recommended unless the incisions have recovered to a greater extent. If the incisions have not improved and the patient sits down, it can cause wound dehiscence. When the wounds split open, it can cause bleeding. Furthermore, it can expose you to more infections. Seroma and hematoma are other complications that can happen if the patient sits right after the surgery.

Implant displacement and rotation: Once the implants are placed inside the buttocks, they need time to drop and settle in the intended position and place. Sitting during the first two weeks can result in implant displacement and rotation. You need to give the implants enough time to get tissue coverage so that implant rotation or movement is prevented. In most cases, it takes the implants two weeks to drop and obtain tissue coverage.

Abnormal scarring and capsular contracture: In case the wound splits open and gets infected due to sitting within the first two weeks after the surgery, it can lead to abnormal scar development and even capsular contracture. Abnormal scars are raised, more prominent, and look aesthetically unpleasant. Capsular contracture is a condition whereby the scar tissue starts to contract continuously. The contraction can change the shape of the buttocks and create physical pain for the patient.

Aesthetic and health complications

Sitting within the two weeks following the surgery can lead to aesthetic and health complications. The results achieved with buttock implant surgery will be lost if you don’t follow the surgeon’s instructions about sitting after the surgery. Your buttocks will appear abnormally shaped if the above-explained complications happen. In many cases, you would be required to undergo a new operation to remove the implants, which will make your buttocks smaller and poorly shaped.

On the other hand, if a severe infection happens due to sitting after the surgery, it can be very risky and even life-threatening. If the infection is limited to the surface or tissue, it can be treated with oral and IV antibiotics. But if it is deep and has reached the implants, you will have to undergo an operation to disinfect the area and remove the implants.

Sitting after fat transfer surgery

Unlike butt implants, fat transfer involves removal of the excess fat from different areas of your body and injecting the fat into the buttocks. The procedure does not require incisions on the buttocks but instead uses special needles to inject the fat cells into the buttocks.

Given the nature of fat transfer, many people would assume that they can sit immediately after the operation. However, this is not true. The fat cells are fragile when they are injected into the buttocks. They are deprived of blood supply when they are removed from the fat donor sites. As such, they are prone to damage and death unless they get a blood supply, become stronger, and nurture.

Once the fat is injected into your buttocks, your body would take time to re-establish blood supply to them. In most cases, it takes two or three weeks for the fat cells to be vascularized. Sitting after fat transfer is not allowed for at least two weeks and unless the fat cells have been vascularized.

If you sit within the two weeks following the operation, the pressure and strain applied to your buttocks can damage the fat cells or even lead to their death. When the fat cells are damaged or when they die, you would lose the aesthetic improvements achieved via the surgery. In other words, the results of the operation depend on the survival of the fat cells and will be lost when the fat cells are killed.

What this means is that if you aim to make your buttocks shapelier with fat transfer, you must avoid sitting for at least two weeks after the surgery. After two weeks you may resume sitting, but you still need to be careful and follow the surgeon’s instructions.

Tips for sitting after buttock augmentation

When you finally resume sitting two weeks after butt augmentation surgery, you still need to be exceptionally careful because your buttocks have not fully healed. It takes six weeks after the operation for the patient to sit as she used to sit before the procedure.

When sitting after the surgery, be sure to place a soft cushion under your buttocks and a rolled towel under your hamstring muscle. Doing so will prevent pressure to your buttocks and keep you safe from complications like wound opening, bleeding, implant rotation, and infection.

You can resume work two weeks after the surgery if your work does not involve a lot of physical activity. At work, do not sit for a prolonged period of time. You should get up and stand or walk around after every twenty minutes or so.

You can resume driving three weeks after the surgery if you are not on medications. When sitting in the car, be sure to place a soft cushion under your buttocks and a rolled towel under your hamstring muscle.

In order to use the restroom during the recovery period, it can be easy for you if you can use a compression garment that can be opened at the bottom. Many surgeons also advise their patients to use stool softeners so they can use the restroom quickly and prevent complications resulting from prolonged sitting in the bathroom.

Conclusion

Buttock augmentation is a primary plastic surgery procedure and involves much trauma. The recovery period is prolonged, and many patients find it overwhelming because they have to follow specific strict instructions for at least two weeks after the surgery. One of the important guidelines you must follow is to avoid sitting for two weeks after the buttock augmentation surgery.

No matter if you have undergone butt augmentation with implants or fat transfer, you must avoid sitting for at least two weeks after the operation. When you sit, it means pressure and strain is applied to the derriere, which can cause many problems that have been explained above. To avoid these problems, you must follow the surgeon’s instructions and avoid sitting for the recommended period.
